Louis Burel was born in 1786 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died in January 1872 in Hog Mountain, Gwinnett County, Georgia. He was a son of Patience Hanna Bird and Jean Baptiste Elzeard Burel.  His wife, Sarah Margaret Jenkins, born in 1800 to Deborah Darby and Randolph Randel Jenkins, died at the age of 95 and is buried next to her husband.

Tombstone Tuesday - John M. Terry, Spanish American War Veteran

This old and weathered grave stone in Harland's Creek Cemetery marks the burial place of John M. Terry, a veteran of the Spanish-American War. According to the inscription on the marker, Mr. Terry served in "CO. A, 5 U.S. VOL., INF, SP. AM. WAR. Although his date of birth is shown on the stone as Mar 31 1871, his date of death is not shown. Harland's Creek Cemetery is located in the Coxburg community of Holmes County, Mississippi.

Tombstone Tuesday - W. F. Michell's Woodmen of the World Grave Stone

The Woodmen of the World grave monument pictured here marks the grave of W. F. Mitchell in Hillcrest Cemetery (aka Goodman Cemetery) in the town of Goodman in Holmes County, Mississippi. According to the inscription on the marker, Mr. Mitchell was born on August 8, 1856 and died February 25, 1915.

Although there are numerous designs for Woodmen of the World monuments that exist in the cemeteries of Mississippi, this monument has two distinct differences from others that I have seen. First, the base is wider, a design that is more characteristic of an actual tree "trunk." The second difference is seen in the way the scroll that bears the Woodmen of the World emblem appears to hang from the bow of a ribbon that wraps around the top of the marker.

Tombstone Tuesday - Isaac Newton Nelson

This well-preserved grave stone that marks the grave of Isaac Newton Nelson is located in Broom Cemetery, near Coffeeville, in Yalobusha County, Mississippi. The marker bears the Masonic emblem that denotes Mr. Broom's membership in the Masonic Order. According to the inscription on his grave stone, Isaac Newton Broom was born on Valentine's Day in 1834, and he died when he was 69 years old.
